Gainesville, Fla. – The ITA Southeast Regionals kicked off Thursday with qualifying action. Only Ángel Guerrero Melgar competed today as the rest of the Yellow Jackets players are in main draw play.
Guerrero Melgar dropped his match to Nilo Duarte of UNF, 6-2, 6-4. Guerrero Melgar will have one more singles match at the regionals tomorrow in the consolation bracket against Alexandros Roumpis of GSU. Guerrero Melgar will pair up with doubles partner Pablo Schechler for main draw doubles play Friday.
Doubles main draw play will start Friday’s matches with No. 8 Marcus McDaniel/Andres Martin facing Roddick/Pavel of UCF. Guerrero Melgar/Schechler match up against No. 43 Grinvalds/Duarte of GSU. Chen Dong and Keshav Chopra take the court against No. 11 Hannestad/Aubone of Miami. All doubles main draw matches kick off at 8:30 a.m. The second round of main draw play will take place right after the opening round.
Singles main draw play starts after the two rounds of doubles play. There will only be one round on the day. No. 26 McDaniel faces off against Nate Bonetto of UF, No. 31 Martin takes the court against Randy Wilson of Florida Gulf Coast, Chopra matches up against Mathis Debru of UGA, Schelcher plays against John Bernard of FSU and Chen Dong will face off against No. 15 Phillip Denning of UGA.
These are all the matches slated for Friday. The regionals run through Monday, Oct. 25.
