Yellow Jackets Making Plays But Seek Consistency

Aug. 14, 2002

Georgia Tech head football Chan Gailey continues to see progress as his Yellow Jackets continue two-a-day practices, but he says he is looking for sharper execution from his squad.

“The positives were that we made some plays on both sides of the ball, and I thought the intensity and hitting were pretty good, but we’re not consistent,” said Gailey following Wednesday evening’s practice, which concluded with a scrimmage session that lasted approximately 30 minutes. “We were very inconsistent, and that bothered me a little.”

Gailey did not hesitate when asked what improvement he would look for Saturday, when his team will next scrimmage.

“Execution on both sides of the ball,” he answered. “That’s something we need to get better at.”

Freshman running back Ajenavi “Ace” Eziemefe, a 6-1, 225-pounder from New Orleans, La., continued to show positive signs.

“He caught the ball and ran well,” said Gailey. “He’s got a lot to learn, but he looks like a true fullback on the field. He’s got some power, he’s got some hands, and he’s got a chance down the line.

“He looks like he’s 240, but he’s not. That probably means we need to get him in shape. He is a bigger back, and he’s got some ability to catch the football, but he’s just got a lot to learn.”

Tech had officials at practice for the first time, giving Gailey a chance to brush up on collegiate rules after spending the last eight years in the National Football League.

“I asked about a couple of things, just some interpretations to make sure I’m on the same page,” he said.

The Jackets return to the practice field with a pair of workouts Thursday, scheduled for 9:15 a.m. and 5:45 p.m.

The team will host its annual Fan Photo Day Saturday from 4-6 p.m. at the Griffin Track. Admission is free and Tech’s players and coaches will be available for photos and autographs.
