ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team (11-6, 1-3 ACC) dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 1 Virginia (18-0, 4-0) Friday afternoon at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

“I have to give all the credit to Virginia,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “They have a very good team and they played well today. I have give credit to our guys too; we had five freshmen out there battling against the number one team in nation.”

Virginia opened with a win from the team of Teddy Angelinos and Lee Singer in the third doubles position and the No. 1-ranked pair of Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey beat Scott Blackmon and Ryan Smith, 8-3, on court one to take the doubles point. The lone win of the day for the Yellow Jackets came in the No. 2 spot where Guillermo Gomez and George Gvelesiani beat the No. 38 team of Sanam Singh and Michael Shabaz, 8-6.

In singles play, Sanam Singh quickly made it 2-0 for the Cavaliers with a, 6-0, 6-1, win over Scott Blackmon in the No. 3 position. The lead increased to 3-0 when the Jacket’s Doug Kenny fell to Angelinos on court six. Treat Huey clinched the match for Virginia with a, 7-5, 6-3, win over Tech’s Smith in No. 2 singles.

On court No. 1, freshman Guillermo Gomez took the first set from the nation’s top-ranked player, Devvarman, but ultimately fell 6-3, 2-6, 3-6.

“I thought we competed very well and had opportunities in sets that we improved upon from our last meeting with a top-five ranked team,” Thorne said. “We’re trying to improve each match and we have a ways to go, but I like what I am seeing.”

The Jackets will be back in action tomorrow as they host Virginia Tech (9-3, 2-1) at 2:30 at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. Live stats will be available at RamblinWreck.com.
