ATLANTA (Oct. 13) — After a three-week layoff since its last tournament, Georgia Tech’s women’s tennis team returns to action this Friday through Sunday at the Tennessee Fall Classic where the Jackets will face some of the stiffest competition they’ll see in the fall season.
Among the teams represented in the flighted singles and doubles tournament will be NCAA participants Tennessee, Minnesota, Missippi State and national finalist Florida.
“The competition should be strong,” said Tech head coach Bryan Shelton. “This is a great opportunity for our girls to play against some of the best players in the country.”
Since hosting the Georgia Tech/Holiday Inn Midtown North Invitational three weeks ago, Shelton has worked on specific aspects of his players’ games.
“I’ve been trying to put them in situations in practice that appeared in their matches,” Shelton said. “I’ve been very specific in the drills that we’ve been doing. Right now we’ve been working hard on finishing out points.”
In the Jackets’ first fall tournament, freshman Jaime Wong (Delray Beach, Fla.), freshman Charlotte Pernet (Dijon, France) and senior Tamarra Jenkin (New Braunfels, Texas) all won their respective singles flights as did the Tech doubles tandems of sophomore Mason Miller (Gainesville, Ga.) and senior Sabrina Pardo (Aix En Provence, France) and freshman Mysti Morris (Cartersville, Ga.) and Wong.
Shelton says he hopes his players’ early success will give them confidence at Tennesee.
“Hopefully we will have some good results and our girls will see that they can compete with just about anyone in the country,” Shelton said.
