Wayne Riles, a tight end from Albany, Ga., has joined the Georgia Tech football program after transferring from Louisville.
Riles, 6-4 and 250 pounds, has enrolled for fall semester classes and will begin practicing with the team but must sit out this fall. He will have three years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2005 season.
He played as a true freshman last fall at Louisville, appearing in all 13 games on special teams. He also saw some action as a third tight end in short-yardage situations.
Riles attended Deerfield-Windsor High, the same school as Tech freshman Kyle Belcher. He was a four-year starter who earned GISA Class AAA first-team all-state honors as a junior and senior. He was honored with the John Reynolds Award, bestowed upon the top player in the Albany area, in 2002, when he helped guide Deerfield Windsor to a 13-2 record and the Georgia Independent Schools Association (GISA) state title.
Riles established school records with 91 career receptions, 1,369 career receiving yards and 407 career tackles. He also logged a school-record 201 tackles as a linebacker during his senior campaign
He was also a four-year letterwinner in basketball and baseball.
Tech continues preseason drills with a workout Monday night at 7:45 p.m. The Jackets open the season Sept. 4 against Samford at 1 p.m. at Bobby Dodd Stadium/Grant Field.
