Tech's Matt Figh Places 12th at National Championships

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Georgia Tech men’s swimmer standout Matt Figh finished 12th in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:03.29 on Wednesday night at the 2004 ConocoPhillips National Championships on the campus of Stanford University.

Figh advanced to the `B’ finals with a time of 2:03.63 in the preliminaries of the 200m fly on Wednesday morning. The Montgomery, Ala., native tied the school record in the 200 freestyle (1:37.70) this past season and will be one of two captains on the men’s team for the 2004-05 season.

Competing in the 2004 Olympics for the Jackets will be current women’s swimmer Vesna Stojanovska (Macedonia) in the 200, 400-meter freestyle and 200m fly events, incoming freshman Onur Uras (Turkey) in the men’s 200m fly and former graduates Jorge Oliver (Puerto Rico) in the 200m IM and Leo Salinas (Mexico) in the 400m free and 4x200m free relay.

The Athens Olympics will get underway on Aug. 13 with the opening ceremonies.
