ATLANTA – Georgia Tech head women’s tennis coach Bryan Shelton was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year, the conference office announced on Friday afternoon. The award is the first for Shelton in his career at Tech.
The Yellow Jackets finished the year fifth in the final ACC standings and advanced to the conference tournament semifinals before falling to top-seeded Duke. Tech currently sports a 14-9 overall record and is ranked 20th in the latest ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
Under Shelton’s guidance, earlier in the year, the Jackets attained the highest ranking in the program’s history, earning the 17th spot in the national polls on April 3. Tech also boasts a pair of singles players that are currently ranked among the nation’s top individuals, as junior Jaime Wong and freshman Catherine Gunn are currently ranked 58th and 70th respectively.
Tech will await word on an at-large bid into the NCAA Championships on May 2 when the field is announced. The full All-ACC women’s tennis team is listed on www.theacc.com.
