ATLANTA — Georgia Tech men’s tennis volunteer assistant coach Robby Ginepri has continued his steady rise in the ATP Tour rankings with two-straight trips to the quarterfinals in his last two Tennis Masters Series outings at Indian Wells in California and at the NASDAQ-100 Open in Miami, Fla.
At the Indian Wells event, Ginepri reached the quarters with his straight-set, 6-0, 6-1 win over Marat Safin in the round of 16, after recording a three-set victory over Hyung-Talk Lee in the opening round by a 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4 count. In the semis, he was unable to get past Lleyton Hewitt, dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
This past week at the NASDAQ-100 tournament, Ginepri get things rolling early on once again, defeating Australian Wayne Arthurs in the first round in straight sets by a 7-5, 6-3 score, before ousting 16th-seeded Alex Corretja in the second round in three sets, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2. The 21 seed James Blake was his next victim, as he easily disposed of Blake in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to reach the quarters for the second-straight tournament. Ginepri battled to a third-set tiebreaker before bowing out to Carlos Moya in the quarterfinals, winning the first set by a 7-6 (5) score before dropping the next two by scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4).
With his recent results, Ginepri has climbed to No. 33 in the latest Champions Points Race, after finishing last year ranked 119th. He has also nearly doubled his career earnings, having won over $107,000 this year alone.
