The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s tennis teams continued to taste success in their first tournaments of the spring.
The women completed competition at the Georgia Invitational in Athens with a successful run through the consolation singles draw by sophomore Jaime Wong. An All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection as a freshman last year, Wong defeated Paulina Castillejos of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-2, Kentucky’s Shannon Stafford, 6-2, 6-2, and Illinois’ Jenny McGaffigan, the third seed in the draw, 6-1, 7-5, before withdrawing from the tournament in the semifinals.
Sophomore Mason Miller also continued competition, falling to Simone Kung of Illinois, 6-3, 0-6, 5-7, in the second round of the consolation draw.
The Yellow Jacket men continued competition at the ACC Indoor Championship in Winston-Salem, N.C. Senior Gordon Hwang, the lone remaining Tech player in the main singles draw, fell to Duke’s Joel Spicher, 4-6, 5-7, in the semifinals.
In the consolation draw, freshman Joao Menano defeated Jonathan Chou of Virginia, 6-4, 6-2, and North Carolina’s Tyne Brownlow, 6-1, 6-0. Classmate Alex Navinkov also advanced when opponent Marcio Petrone of UNC withdrew.
In doubles play, two Tech duos advanced to the quarterfinals. Sophomore David Wright and senior Jason Yeong defeated UNC’s Brownlow and David Cheatwood, 8-2. Senior Romain Coirault and freshman Joao Menano advanced with an 8-6 victory over Tarheels Petrone and Nicholas Monroe. Navinkov and freshman Amit Taggar dropped a second-round match to Wake Forest’s Andrew Simpson and Rick Phillip, 3-8.
Competition concludes on Monday.
