Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board Sending More Than 1,100 Toys to New York City

Nov. 29, 2001

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Board’s toy drive during last Saturday’s Tech-Georgia football game was a huge success, with more than 1,100 toys being collected. The items will now be sent to New York City and distributed to families affected by the September 11 tragedy.

The toys will be distributed through the Family Assistance Center, an organization recommended by the New York City Office of the Mayor’s Community Assistance Unit.

The toys were shipped Wednesday via United Parcel Service, which donated the cost of shipping. Box USA of Stockbridge, Ga., and Peachtree Packaging of Lawrenceville, Ga., donated the boxes used to ship the items.

The toys collected ranged from Tonka trucks, Easy-Bake Ovens and walkie-talkies to CD players, books and stuffed animals.

“We were really happy with the turn out,” said Mimi Utt, Tech softball player and Student-Athlete Advisory Board member. “The community responded with open arms. It was great.”
