April 8, 2003

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech softball team (29-16, 3-1 ACC) concludes its 10-game road swing Wednesday with a trip to Georgia Southern (19-17, 3-5 Southern) for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Eagle Field. Tech defeated Georgia Southern, 7-2, earlier this season.

The Jackets are 5-3 through the first eight games of their road trip. Last weekend, Tech took three of its first four conference games by sweeping Maryland and splitting with Virginia. Georgia Southern is coming off three losses at College of Charleston last weekend.

In the season’s first meeting between the Jackets and Eagles, Tech topped the Eagles in the first game of 2003 at Glenn Field. The second game of the doubleheader was rained out. The Jackets defeated the Eagles, 7-2, behind two hits and three runs batted from catcher Lindsay Wood and two RBI from Liz Bartle. Junior pitcher Erin Voeltz picked up the win after allowing two runs on five hits in six innings. Tech leads the all-time series with the Eagles, 31-12.

Junior Tara Knudsen leads the Tech lineup with a .310 average, nine home runs and 30 RBI. Sophomore Jessica Sallinger, who picked up a pair of conference wins over the weekend, is 16-10 with a 1.15 earned run average. She is holding opposing batters to a .139 average.

Freshman Shanita Black paces Georgia Southern with a .314 average. Sam Steiner is second with a .280 average, to go along with five homers and 17 RBI. Tiffany Urena (8-4) is the Eagles’ top pitcher with a 2.04 ERA.

Following Wednesday’s action, the Jackets host Mississippi State Monday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
