Sept. 21, 2010

TUCSON, Ariz. – Georgia Tech baseball’s 2010 recruiting class has been ranked No. 6 in the nation, as announced by Collegiate Baseball Magazine Tuesday.

“The ranking is a testimony to the hard work of Bryan Prince and Tom Kinkelaar,” said head coach Danny Hall of his two assistants. “It also speaks volumes for the talent of this class and we are excited to begin a new year.”

The Georgia Tech coaching staff lured in the No. 1 overall recruiting class in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the best in the state of Georgia. The staff was able to find most of the talent right at home, as 12 of the 17 newcomers are from the Peach State.

Six of the 17 newcomers were selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, three were named prep All-Americans and nine were rated among the top-20 prospects in their respective states according to Perfect Game Cross Checker.

Players selected in the draft include Matthew Grimes (Chicago White Sox, 4th round), DeAndre Smelter (Minnesota Twins, 14th round), Daniel Palka (Philadelphia Phillies, 19th round), Mott Hyde (Toronto Blue Jays, 44th round), Chris Triplett (Detroit Tigers, 47th round) and Dusty Isaacs (Pittsburgh Pirates, 50th round).

Georgia Tech is one of four ACC schools that had a recruiting class ranked in the top-25, with Florida State (17th), Miami (23rd) and North Carolina (25th) rounding out the conference list.

LSU earned the top ranking by Collegiate Baseball, welcoming 19 recruits, including 11 freshmen and six junior college transfers, to its 2010 team.

The Jackets began team practice on Sept. 7, and will conclude their six-week fall schedule with the White and Gold World Series Oct. 11-13 at Russ Chandler -Stadium.
