ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s track and field team will be traveling north this weekend for the 2007 Penn Relay Carnival at Franklin Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia, Penn.
In its 112-year history, the Carnival has provided competition for more athletes than any other track meet in the world. During the past ten years, more than 100,000 young men and women from high schools, colleges, clubs, the armed services, preparatory schools, junior high schools, middle schools, parochial schools, and elementary schools have competed in the Carnival. The athletes range in age from under eight to over 80.
Last week, the Tech men’s team placed sixth at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships in College Park, Md.
Five members of the men’s track and field team have qualified for this years NCAA Regional. Senior James Lemons II headlines the list, qualifying in both the triple jump and long jump. Lemons garnered the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship in the triple jump last week with a personal-best and track record mark of 52 feet, 5 inches.
Redshirt freshman Steve Marcelle has also qualified for two events for this season’s NCAA Regional. Marcelle placed second last week at the ACC Championships in the shot put with a school-record mark of 61 feet, 11 ¾ inches. He has also qualified in the discus with a best mark of 178 feet, 6 inches.
