Tech-Georgia Southern Softball Postponed due to Rain

April 9, 2003

STATESBORO, Ga. – With the Jackets leading 4-0 in the top of the fifth, the first game of Wednesday’s softball doubleheader between Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern was halted due to heavy rains that hit the area at 4:19 p.m. A make up date for both games of the doubleheader has not yet been announced.

Before the rains came, Tech starter Erin Voeltz was dominant from the start and held the Eagles without a hit over the game’s first four innings. She walked none and struck out two.

Center fielder Sara Wissmann drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first to give the Jackets a 1-0 lead. Second baseman Felicia Coursey, who led off the game with a single up the middle, came home on the play.

Tech increased its lead to 3-0 in the second on a pair of unearned runs. Left fielder Kirin Kumar reached on an error by the Eagle third baseman to start the rally. Third baseman Tara Neff legged out an infield single, and shortstop Tara Knudsen walked for the second time in the game to load the bases. First baseman Katie Donovan then grounded to third but GSU first baseman Christi Aitken dropped the throw, allowing two runs to score.

Donovan drove in the fourth run of the day on a run-scoring ground out in the fourth. Neff singled and took third on a single by Knudsen before scoring on Donovan’s grounder to second.

Tech (28-16, 3-1 ACC) returns to action Monday when Mississippi State comes to Atlanta for an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Glenn Field. WREK (91.1 AM) will broadcast both games.
