Swarn Leads Tech Track Team at Clemson Meet

ATLANTA (May 14) — Georgia Tech’s Bryan Swarn ran an NCAA provisional time in the 400 meters and then anchored the Rambling Wreck’s 4×400-meter relay team to an NCAA provisional mark Sunday at Clemson’s Orange and Purple Classic.

Swarn, a sophomore from Englewood, Colo., ran a personal best time of 45.88 in the 400 as he tied for first place in the event with former Tech all-America Jonas Motiejunas, running for Bronx International. Swarn easily surpassed the provisional qualifying standard of 46.20 and moved closer to the automatic mark of 45.40.

Swarn then teamed with senior Michael Johnson, senior Tosin Tomori and freshman Sharif Azim to win the 4×400 relay in 3:05.38, more than four seconds better than second-place Pittsburgh and well under the provisional standard of 3:07.00. The automatic qualifying time is 3:03.80.

Senior Malcolm Leason had his string of three consecutive victories in the triple jump snapped with a fourth-place finish (50 feet-5.25 inches). Freshman Sean Harrington placed third in the hammer throw (155 feet-9.0 inches), senior Jamie Traylor was fourth in the pole vault (15 feet-1.0 inches), and freshman Brian Fraser was fifth in the long jump (22 feet-5.25 inches).

The top finisher for the Tech women was senior Judy Johnson, who placed third in the 1500 meters (4:41.50), ahead of teammate Katie Griffin (4:42.00), who was fourth. Freshman Jamie Ostrov was fifth in the high jump with a personal-best performance of 5 feet-6.5 inches.

The Yellow Jackets end the regular season by hosting the Georgia Tech-Reebok Invitational, Friday and Saturday at the Griffin Track on the Tech campus.
