Swarn Earns NCAA Automatic Bid at Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA (May 20) – Hundreds of athletes took advantage of their final opportunity to qualify for the 2000 NCAA Track and Field Championships as they competed in the Georgia Tech-Reebok Invitational Friday and Saturday at George C. Griffin Track on the campus of Georgia Tech. Sixteen athletes earned automatic qualifications to the NCAA Championships to be held May 31-June 6 in Durham, N.C.

The Georgia Tech men demonstrated their considerable talent in the 400 meters. Yellow Jacket sophomore Bryan Swarn earned an automatic qualification to the NCAA Track and Field Championship with a personal best 45.36 in the 400 meters and senior Michael Johnson posted an NCAA provisional mark of 45.7, also a personal best.

Swarn and Johnson teamed with sophomore Aaron Sink and freshman Sharif Azim to post an NCAA provisional mark of 3:04.07 and finish second behind Sprint Capital in the 4×400 meter relay. The Jackets improved upon their best mark of the season, a 3:05.38 effort they turned in last week. The Rambling Wreck mile relay team has compiled 12 Atlantic Coast Conference titles and four NCAA championships in the last decade.

Tech senior Malcolm Leason finished third in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional mark of 16.12 meters (52 feet-10.75 inches). He improved upon his previous best of 15.97 m (52-4.75).

Becky Megesi highlighted the Yellow Jacket womens team with a provisional mark of 2:06.21 in the 800 meters.
