Spring Practice Update #12

April 13, 2013

Georgia Tech scrimmaged Saturday morning in Bobby Dodd Stadium. While there were positives and negatives on both sides of the ball, head coach Paul Johnson was frustrated with the offense early on, specifically mistakes that would be considered self-inflicted.

“It’s pretty hard to play when every other play the snap goes over (the quarterback’s) head,” Johnson said. “We have to do a better job of coaching that (the snap).”

Tech is without two-year starting center Jay Finch, who is out this spring to recover from shoulder surgery. Also out is redshirt freshman Freddie Burden, who is out with an injury. That leaves Catlin Alford as the only scholarship player at center, although senior Ray Beno played several snaps there this morning. Redshirt freshman walk-on Michael Muns may have been the most consistent center in the scrimmage.

Some of the individual highlights from the scrimmage:

– Sophomore Chris Milton had an impressive scrimmage, highlighted by a key tackle for loss on 1st and goal from the 7, and a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown.

– Senior Justin Moore continued to kick the ball well this spring, booting an impressive 52-yard field goal with room to spare. He also had a 20-yard field goal.

– Senior David Scully, who is battling Moore for the starting job, went 2-3 on field goal attempts including a long of 42 yards.

– Junior Quayshawn Nealy recorded a huge sack of Vad Lee.

– Lee came back later to rush for a five-yard touchdown.

– B-back Matt Connors rumbled for a 60-yard gain for a touchdown.

– R-Fr. Roderick Chungong sacked Tim Byerly.

– Redshirt freshman safety Lynn Griffin leveled Dennis Andrews for a tackle for loss.

– Andrews rebounded to have a 60-yard rushing attempt, and a 10-yard touchdown run.

– Sophomore Adam Gotsis recorded a sack of r-Fr. QB Justin Thomas.

– Quarterback Vad Lee completed a 40-yard pass to A-back B.J. Bostic.

MORE SCRIMMAGE NOTES: Georgia Tech athletic director Mike Bobinski, who threw out the first pitch prior to Friday night’s thrilling baseball win over Virginia, was on the sidelines… former players in attendance included Mansfield Wrotto, A.J. Smith, Sedric Griffin and Jason Peters.

NEXT UP: The Yellow Jackets will practice Monday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon prior to Friday’s spring game – Friday Night on the Flats (presented by CBC).

42: Donovan Wilson, the only true freshman in camp, wears No. 42, and Wilson joked today that he almost feels obligated to watch the movie, 42. Speaking of that, here are the Yellow Jackets who have donned No. 42 over the last several years:

2013 – Donovan Wilson
2008-12 – Malcolm Munroe
2003-07 – Adamm Oliver
2000-02 – Recardo Wimbush
1999 – Josh Rackley
1998 – Robert Nelson
