Second-Ranked Tech Golf Fourth After 18 Holes At Puerto Rico Classic

Rio Mar, P.R. – The Georgia Tech men’s golf team is in fourth place after the first day of competition at the Puerto Rico Classic. The 54-hole event is being contested at the par-72, 6,945-yard Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico.

The Yellow Jackets finished the day with a team score of 8-over-par 296, and trail round one leader Clemson (289) by seven strokes entering today’s second round. Georgia Tech is the defending champion of the tournament.

Tech’s individuals in the field were led by senior Bryce Molder, who carded a 1-under-par round of 35-36-71 and is one of three players tied for third place. Molder trails individual leader Lucas Glover of Clemson by three shots after Glover fired a 4-under-par round of 34-34-68.

The Jackets’ next three individuals in the field are part of an eight-player logjam in 30th place after each finished the first day with a 3-over-par score of 75. Sophomore Troy Matteson finished at 37-38-75, senior Wes Latimer had a 39-36-75, and junior Matt Weibring was at 37-38-75 after 18 holes.

Rounding out the Tech contingent in the field is junior Kris Mikkelsen, who is tied for 62nd place after his opening-round score of 40-40¯80.

The tournament continues today, Monday, February 26, with the second round of play, and concludes on Tuesday with the final round.
