Columbia, S.C. – Georgia Tech junior, Scott Blackmon plowed through the competition at the USC Fall Invitational over the weekend, to the finals where he faced Victor Sanakipapi of Auburn University at Montgomery, and was defeated, 7-5, 6-0 Sunday.
Blackmon downed his first round opponent, Charleston Southern’s Quentin Guichard, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, Friday. Blackmon then played two matches Saturday, defeating Robin Fernandes of the University of Texas San Antonio, 6-3, 6-4, and Dragan Gisercic of South Carolina State, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-1. In Sunday’s semifinals match, Blackmon eliminated Auburn’s Lukas Marsoun, 6-4, 7-6(4).
Austin Roebuck and Luke-Rassow Kantor also made the trip to Columbia for the three-day tournament. Roebuck fell in the opening round Friday to Clemson’s Carlos Alvarez, 6-3, 6-0, but advanced to the finals of the consolation rounds where he lost in three sets. Rassow-Kantor was victorious in the first round, defeating Andres Amores of Jacksonville State, 6-2, 6-1. In the second round, Rassow-Kantor faced No. 4 seed Roy Sichel of UNC Charlotte and lost, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3.
Rassow-Kantor and Blackmon also competed in doubles play, defeating Sebastian Gonzales Obregoso and Javier Tori in the first round, 9-7. The pair then lost in the second round to Auburn’s Milan Krenjetin and Lukas Marsoun, 9-7.
The three-day invitational included more than 180 players from 33 schools competing in six singles flights and three doubles flights.
For their next competition, the Yellow Jackets will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mideast Men’s Regional Championship October 19-22 hosted by the University of North Carolina.
