Quarterback Battle Continues

Georgia Tech’s quarterback position continues to be a battle, and head coach Chan Gailey indicated that he likely would not name a starter until the week of the first game.

True freshman Reggie Ball, senior A.J. Suggs, last year’s starter, and true freshman Patrick Carter are working at the position.

“Obviously we’re giving Reggie the majority of the snaps with the ones right now, and he’s making good progress,” said Gailey. “Reggie and A.J. are both doing nice things. Right now, I see us making the decision the week of the game.”

Both Ball and Suggs showed positive signs in Tuesday’s scrimmage session. Ball tossed a short touchdown pass to tight end John Paul Foschi, while Suggs capped the two-minute drill with a 28-yard touchdown pass to freshman Chris Dunlap.

Sophomore P.J. Daniels has practiced well the last two days after missing some time with a minor injury. The former walk-on from Houston, Texas, is the leading candidate to replace Tony Hollings as Tech’s starting tailback. Sophomore Ajenavi Eziemefe, sophomore Chris Woods, a transfer from Morris Brown, and freshman Rashaun Grant are also competing for playing time.

“He made some people miss,” said Gailey of Daniels, who rushed for 255 yards and two touchdowns last fall. “If you had a question about last year, it was, Could he change direction and make some people miss? I thought today he did nice job of that.

“Right now, P.J. is the starter, and I don’t know who will rest him at this point. Ace has done some decent things and Chris Woods has done a lot of nice things, and even Rashaun Grant has done some good things.”

Gailey said that he “100 percent” expected sophomore Damarius Bilbo to remain at Tech

“I just talked to him about where I thought he was and where he could, and we are on the same page about that,” said Gailey. “He’s a class act. I know what kind of person he is, so I know that he wants to find a way to help us win.”
