Pope Earns ACC and National Player of the Week Honors

April 18, 2011

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech junior Mark Pope was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, and a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Player of the Week on Monday after tossing a complete-game one-hitter against Wake Forest over the weekend.

Pope held Wake Forest to just one hit over nine innings, tossing his fourth complete game of the season in a 5-1 win over the Demon Deacons on Friday night. He retired 16 of the final 18 batters of the game, including a stretch of 14 straight at one point. The Marietta, Ga., native retired the side in six of the nine innings. It was the first one-hitter tossed by a Georgia Tech pitcher in a nine-inning game since the 1997 season and marked the fewest hits an ACC team has been held to all season.

Pope, who was named ACC Pitcher of the Week for the third time and a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week for the second time this season, added eight strikeouts en route to his eighth win of the year.
