Payne Named ACC Baseball Player of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech outfielder Danny Payne was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week.

Payne hit .714 (10-for-14) to lead No. 1 Georgia Tech to a three-game sweep of Rutgers over the weekend. The sophomore outfielder had three doubles, two home runs, 10 RBIs, five runs scored and a stolen base. He walked twice, posting a .750 on base percentage, and had a 1.357 slugging percentage.

On Friday, Payne had four hits, including a home run and two doubles, and drove in a career-high seven runs. He also made his collegiate pitching debut on Friday, pitching a 1-2-3 ninth inning in Georgia Tech’s series opening win. On Saturday, the Woodstock, Ga., native hit his second home run of the weekend, going 2-for-2 with two walks. In the series finale on Sunday, Payne went 4-for-5 and scored two runs.

For the season, Payne is batting a team-best .436 with a league-high 20 runs scored in leading the Yellow Jackets to a perfect 13-0 record in 2006.
