ATLANTA – Georgia Tech head coach George O’Leary is one of five coaches elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association, along with Stanford’s Tyrone Willingham, Todd Berry of Army, R.C. Slocum of Texas A&M and Larry Kehres of Mount Union. The five were elected by members attending the 2001 AFCA Convention in Atlanta.
The Board formulates policy and provides direction for the AFCA, which has more than 8,000 members and was founded in 1922 by legendary former Georgia Tech coach John Heisman, Amos Alonzo Stagg and others.
Winner of the 2000 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award, O’Leary just completed his sixth full year as the Yellow Jackets’ head coach, a season in which he guided Tech to a 9-3 record, a fourth straight bowl appearance and a final No. 17 national ranking. The 33-year coaching veteran has a record of 45-28 (.616). in his six seasons as a head coach and has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year twice in the last three seasons.
