No. 2 Tech Women Host No. 14 Vanderbilt Wednesday

March 4, 2008

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech’s second-ranked women’s tennis team continues its tough schedule this Wednesday when they host No. 14 Vanderbilt in a match that is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. The match will be held at the Bill Moore Tennis Center on Georgia Tech’s campus. Live stats will be available at Ramblinwreck.com.

The Yellow Jackets (9-2) will be playing their eighth match against a top-25 team when they square off against the Commodores (7-2) this week, and their sixth against a top-15 team. Tech’s last eight opponents have all been ranked in the top-30, while the Yellow Jackets’ next four all stand in the top-20 (three of which are ranked in the top-10 in the latest polls).

The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 5-2 win at No. 16 Notre Dame following a 6-1 win in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener vs. No. 24 Clemson. Vanderbilt will be playing its third-straight road match, and lost the first two, 5-2, at No. 7 Florida, and 4-3, at No. 30 South Carolina.

The Commodores have won nine of the previous 11 matches between the two schools, including a 5-2 victory over the Jackets a year ago in Nashville. Tech won the last contest held in Atlanta, 7-0, in 2006.

Georgia Tech’s Kristi Miller was named this week’s ACC Women’s Tennis Performer of the Week following an impressive singles performance last week. Prior to stopping Notre Dame’s 59th-ranked Kelcy Tefft, 6-3, 6-4, over the weekend, she knocked off the nation’s top-ranked singles player, Ani Mijacika of Clemson, 6-4, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (6). The win extended the Tech senior’s streak to three years in which she’s defeated a No. 1-ranked singles player.

Following the match against Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech will have one day off before resuming ACC play, facing No. 20 Florida State in Tallahassee Friday at 3 p.m.
