No. 1 Tech Tennis Drops 4-3 Match to No. 25 William & Mary

Feb. 10, 2007

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After winning the doubles point, No. 25 William & Mary (4-0) took three of the six singles matches to earn a 4-3 victory over No. 1 Georgia Tech (3-1) Saturday afternoon at the Atkins Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Illinois.

The nation’s top-ranked duo of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic gave William & Mary the quick edge, cruising to an 8-4 victory over Tech’s Kristi Miller and Whitney McCray before the tandem of Ragini Acharya and Magdalena Bresson clinched the doubles point for the Tribe with an 8-6 win over the Jackets’ rookie tandem of Amanda Craddock and Kirsten Flower.

Tech tied the match at 1-1 when 52nd-ranked Whitney McCray, playing in her first singles dual match of the season, quickly topped Carmen Pop, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 6 singles slot, but the Tribe regained the lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win by Acharya at the No. 3 position.

Amanda McDowell helped the Jackets even the score at 2-2 when she downed William & Mary’s Barbara Zidek, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 singles, but fifth-ranked Moulton-Levy gave the Tribe the lead with a come-from-behind win at the top of the singles lineup.

No. 82 Alison Silverio came back after dropping her first set to win 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 over Bresson, tying the match at 3-3, but 68th-ranked Zoricic proved to be too much for the rookie Tech star Flower, as the Tribe earned the fourth and deciding point at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2.

The Jackets will return to the Atkins Tennis Center Sunday to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini before traveling to Evanston for a matchup with the sixth-ranked Northwestern Wildcats Monday.
