Metivier Earns All-America Honors in 5000 as Tech Track Concludes NCAA Championships

May 31, 2002

BATON ROUGE, La. – Georgia Tech sophomore Renee Metivier earned her fourth All-America honor of the 2001-02 school year Friday, as she placed eighth in the 5000 meters at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium.

Metivier clocked a time of 16:31.75 to finish eighth and give the Jackets their lone team point of the meet. Stanford’s Lauren Fleshman won the race in a time of 15:53.91.

Metivier enjoyed a stellar sophomore season, including a national runner-up and All-America finish at the 2001 NCAA Cross Country Championships. She also earned All-America honors in the 3000 and 5000 at this year’s indoor NCAA championships.

She is the first Jacket to earn All-America accolades in cross country, indoor and outdoor track in the same season and in a career.

The team point is the first for Tech’s women’s team at the NCAA outdoor championships since the Jackets tied for 30th place with nine points at the 1999 meet.
