Lewis, Rynders Lift No. 7 Tech Past Jacksonville State, 10-2

Box Score

ATLANTA (Feb. 22) – Sophomores Richard Lewis and Wes Rynders each tallied three hits on Tuesday afternoon helping to propel No. 7 Georgia Tech over Jacksonville State 10-2 at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Tech (7-1) scored in all but the third inning and slapped out 16 hits, 15 singles and a double, against Gamecocks’ pitchers in the contest.

The Jackets plated their first run in the bottom of the first inning on the strength of a single by junior right fielder Jason Basil. Tech added a run in the second inning on an RBI double by Lewis to increase the lead to 2-0.

After the Gamecocks (7-2) used a solo home run by Russell Harry in the fourth to cut the Tech lead to 2-1, the Jackets scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to open up a 6-1 lead. A sacrifice fly by Lewis, two-run double by Derik Goffena and ground out by Mark Teixeira pushed across the four Tech runs in the fourth.

The 6-1 cushion proved to be more than enough for the Tech pitching staff. Brad Busbin (1-0) picked up his first career win by allowing just two runs and four hits over five innings. Kevin Cameron pitched three hitless innings, while Andy Mitchell came on to shut out JSU in the ninth.

Tech scored single runs in each of their final four half-innings at the plate to provide the final 10-2 margin.

The Jackets return to action on Saturday afternoon against UNC Greensboro in a 1:30 p.m. contest at Russ Chandler Stadium.
