ATLANTA (June 3) — Georgia Tech’s men’s 4×400 relay team assured itself of all-America honors and standouts Andria King (Atlanta, Ga.) and Becky Megesi (Jonesboro, Ga.) each advanced Thursday after preliminary heats during the 1999 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Boise State’s Bronco Track Complex.
The 4×400 relay team of Michael Johnson (Littleton, Colo.), Tosin Tomori (Harare, Zimbabwe), Bryan Swarn (Englewood, Colo.) and Jonas Motiejunas (Phoenix, Ariz.) ran a 3:05.88 to qualify for Saturday’s eight-team finals. The time was the third fastest in their heat and seventh fastest overall, and awards the team all-America status for finishing in the top eight. Motiejunas and Johnson were members of last year’s NCAA Outdoor 4×400 national champion team.
King, a senior, won her heat in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 12.98 and advanced to Friday’s semifinal round at 9:50 p.m., EST. It was the third legal time of 13 seconds she has run this year and it was the fourth fastest time of the day.
Megesi, a junior, advanced to the finals of 1,500 meters Friday after running a 4:24.90 to finish fourth in the fastest heat of the day. She finished just 72-hundreths of a second out second place and 95-hundreths of a second from first. Twelve competitors will be vying for the national title with the top eight gaining all-America honors Saturday at 9:30 p.m., EST.
Motiejunas finished sixth in the fast heat of the 400 meters in 46.67 seconds, but did not advance to the finals.
