Georgia Tech’s Jose Muguruza advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championships with his victory Wednesday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Muguruza, the nation’s 22nd ranked singles player dropped the first set of his match, but rebounded with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 45 Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech in the first round of the singles tournament. Muguruza advances to the Round of 32 where he will face fourth-seeded Catalin Gard of Ole Miss Thursday morning.
“This was a good opening match for me today,” said Muguruza. “It felt really good to get back out on the court and compete again and I feel fortunate to come away with a victory. Now I’ve got a chance to relax and prepare for my match tomorrow, which will be very tough.”
Muguruza now has a 28-13 record on the season, including 11 wins over ranked opponents this year.
In addition to Muguruza, the doubles team of David North and Marko Rajevac will begin play Thursday afternoon, facing Zach Ganger and Miron Mann from the University of Utah.
