ATLANTA (Apr. 7) – The Georgia Tech football team holds its annual “Springfest” scrimmage Saturday morning at Bobby Dodd Stadium/Grant Field.
Practice begins at 10:30 a.m. with the final spring scrimmage scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Springfest is open to the public free of charge with seating available in the west stands of Bobby Dodd Stadium. Activities, including children’s games and season ticket seat selection, begin at 10 a.m. in the Callaway Plaza outside the north end zone.
“We’re going to get a little practice in first, and then for the scrimmage, we’ll basically work ones against twos,” said Tech head coach George O’Leary, whose Yellow Jackets conclude spring practice with have two final workouts next Tuesday and Wednesday. “I hope to get a full game in, about 85 or 90 plays.
“One thing we want to make sure that we accomplish it to get a look-see at all of our installation, as far as offense and defense. I want our execution to be better than the last scrimmage but still maintain the intensity.”
O’Leary will also take a look at the kicking game, where Tech returns both starters in sophomore placekicker Luke Manget (Conyers, Ga.) and sophomore punter Dan Dyke (Winter Springs, Fla.).
Manget set a Tech record as a freshman with 86 points, including a perfect 53-for-53 on extra points, and booted game-saving field goals against North Carolina and Georgia.
Dyke, a first-team Academic All-America, averaged 43.8-yards per punt, while Tech’s net of 39.5 yards was good for 12th in the nation. Dyke has received competition this spring from sophomore Chris Morehouse (Vernon, Conn.), in his first season of eligiblity after tranferring from Albright College. In 1998, he led Division III in putning with a 43.2-yard averaged and was a first-team all-America.
