Jackets' Season Opener Set for Primetime

May 25, 2017

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s 2017 season opener versus Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game on Monday, Sept. 4, will be nationally televised in primetime, the Atlantic Coast Conference and ESPN announced on Thursday. The contest will kick off at 8 p.m. ET at brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in downtown Atlanta and air on ESPN.

This year’s Labor Day opener marks the 44th all-time meeting between Georgia Tech and Tennessee. The Yellow Jackets and Volunteers squared off 35 times between 1946-1987 but have not met on the gridiron since the series was halted three decades ago. Tennessee holds a 24-17-2 lead in the all-time series but Georgia Tech owns a 13-11-1 advantage in games played in Atlanta.

The Jackets carry a three-game winning streak against Southeastern Conference opponents into the season opener versus Tennessee, including triumphs over Georgia and Kentucky to close the ’16 campaign.

Coming off a 9-4 campaign and the 25th bowl victory in school history, Georgia Tech returns 16 starters (eight on offense, eight on defense) in 2017. The Jackets’ 16 returning starters are tied for the 15th-most in the nation.

The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is part of Georgia Tech football’s 2017 season tickets, which are on sale now, beginning at just $300 per seat. In addition to the season opener versus Tennessee at MBS, the Yellow Jackets’ highly anticipated 2017 home schedule includes six games at Bobby Dodd Stadium, highlighted by showdowns against North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Georgia.
