Jackets Continue Preparations for BYU

Aug. 23, 2003

As Georgia Tech works toward its season-opening game at Brigham Young, the Yellow Jackets are preparing for a unique challenge from the BYU defense, which features a new coordinator in former New Mexico assistant Bronco Mendenhall and an attacking, “3-3” scheme.

Tech and the Cougars kick off at 9:30 p.m. next Thursday at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, in a nationally televised contest on ESPN2.

“You have to identify where they are blitzing from and make you can protect that side,” said Gailey of the BYU defense. “You have to be able to read that.”

Gailey said all three Tech quarterbacks have been performing well.

“Reggie’s last two days have been very consistent, Patrick Carter has had his best days the last four or five days, and A.J. has thrown the ball pretty well,” he said.

“We’re closer – we’re one day closer,” joked Gailey about how soon he would name a starting quarterback. He has indicated that he might not announce the starter until game time.

The Yellow Jackets are fighting through a number of nagging injuries, but Gailey expects most of those to be healed for the trip to BYU, including center Hugh Reilly, who sustained a minor injury Friday.

“I’m concerned about any position where we have injuries, but none of them are major,” said Gailey. “As we start to slow down and get near the game, I hope they’ll be 100 percent and ready to go for the game.”
