Guillermo Gomez Rises to No. 3 in ITA National Rankings

Feb. 20, 2010

Georgia Tech’s Guillermo Gomez is ranked No. 3 in the nation in rankings released Friday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. It is the highest singles ranking ever held by a Tech men’s player.

Gomez, a junior from Alicante, Spain, began the spring ranked No. 4 and inched up one spot after winning four of his first five singles matches of the spring. The only loss occurred to the nation’s seventh-ranked player, Alexandre Lacroix of Florida, on the road. He is 17-4 in singles matches this year, 8-3 against ranked players.

Gomex shared the championship of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., and advanced to the finals of the ITA Indoor Championships in the fall.

Along the way to the ITA finals, Gomez defeated three players ranked in the nation’s top 20, including No. 3 Robert Farah of Southern California and No. 14 Michael Shabaz of Virginia. The Trojans’ Steve Johnson, who defeated Gomez in the finals, is No. 1.
