Georgia Tech's Teixeira Named National Player of the Year by Sporting News

ATLANTA (June 1) — Georgia Tech sophomore third baseman Mark Teixeira (Severna Park, Md.) was named the 2000 College Baseball National Player of the Year by The Sporting News.

Teixeira, the 2000 Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, leads the ACC in batting average (.422), home runs (18), runs scored (104), slugging percentage (.776) and on base percentage (.547).

Teixeira was named a first-team All-American by The Sporting News, while teammate Richard Lewis, Georgia Tech’s second baseman and leadoff hitter, was tabbed to the second-team All-America squad.

Teixeira becomes the second Georgia Tech player to earn national player of the year honors. Former catcher Jason Varitek, now a member of the Boston Red Sox, was Tech’s first such honoree in 1994.
