Georgia Tech's Anderson Set to Compete at Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships

Nov. 7, 2001

ATLANTA — Georgia Tech junior tennis player Roger Anderson will look to continue his recent run of success this weekend when he travels to Farmers Branch, Texas to compete in the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club.

The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Championship is the second major tournament of the collegiate tennis season and features 32 of the top singles players from around the nation. The ITA All-American Championships in October and the NCAA Championships in May make up college tennis’ Triple Crown.

Anderson, a native of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, earned an automatic berth in the National Indoor Championships when he captured the Omni Hotels Region II Championship in Chapel Hill, N.C., on October 28. He downed David Lowenthals of Wake Forest in the finals to become one of 17 automatic qualifiers for the Indoor Championships this weekend. The victory, which marks one of the top accomplishments of Anderson’s career, made him the first Yellow Jacket tennis player ever to win the regional championship.

Anderson will open play on Thursday morning, when he faces Andy Leber of Texas-Arlington. The tournament will continue on Friday with the second round and quarterfinals, and will conclude on Sunday with the finals of both singles and doubles play.
