ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team is ranked No. 10 in the first national poll of the 2010 season, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Yellow Jackets, who finished the 2009 season ranked No. 8, will begin the spring season ranked in the national top 10 for the fifth straight year under head coach Bryan Shelton.
The reigning NCAA Champion Duke Blue Devils earned the top spot in the initial poll and is followed by (in order): Northwestern, California, Georgia, Baylor, Notre Dame, Miami (FL), Florida, USC, and Georgia Tech. The Blue Devils received 21 of 51 possible votes to claim the top spot in the rankings.
Sophomore Irina Falconi, who won the 2009 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships singles title and was a singles finalist at the 2009 Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, was tabbed the top singles player in the nation in the preseason poll. She is the second Yellow Jacket to earn a No. 1 national ranking, joining former Tech standout Kristi Miller.
Falconi and senior Amanda McDowell are ranked No. 32 in the first doubles poll of the year. Junior Sasha Krupina earned a No. 66 singles ranking for the Yellow Jackets after a solid fall.
The Yellow Jackets will kick-off the 2010 spring season on Monday, Jan. 18 against Chattanooga. The match at the Bill Moore Tennis Center is scheduled for a noon start.
