Bill Healy, who was a star football player at Baylor School before he was an All-American at Georgia Tech, died Wednesday in Florida.
He graduated from Baylor in 1942 and served in the 88th Calvary reconnaissance squadron in the European Theater during WW II. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star for gallantry in action.
After the war, he went to Georgia Tech and was captain of the football team. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1948.
He was a member of the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame, Georgia Tech Hall of Fame,Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and a charter member of the Lookout Mountain Sports Hall of Fame.
He was part of a three generation college football family as sons, Chip (1968 All-American at Vanderbilt), and Rob (Ga. Tech, 1971-73), and grandson, Will (Richmond, 2005-2008), followed him on the gridiron. Will is currently an assistant coach at Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Bill and Chip are on a short list of SEC father-son football All-Americans.
He was the president of Volunteer Sales Company, a food brokerage firm serving the Tri-State areas of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. He was a founding member of the Honors Course in Chattanooga and a member of the Lookout Mountain Golf Club, Sawgrass Country Club and a member of the U.S. Seniors.
He served on the vestry at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain, as Senior and Junior Warden, and was later a member of Christ Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., on Friday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. where the family will receive friends following the service in the church parish hall.
There will also be a graveside service at Forest Hills Cemetery, Chattanooga, at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1.
