Five Jackets Named to Academic All-ACC Baseball Team

July 6, 2006

Five members of Georgia Tech’s College World Series squad were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic baseball team, led by Academic All-America Steven Blackwood.

In addition to Blackwood, pitchers Lee Hyde, Tim Gustafson, Brad Rulon and Ryan Turner were named to the Academic All-ACC team, announced Thursday by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. Athletic accomplishments are also considered.

Blackwood, a Biology major, was a two-time all-ACC selection in the outfield for the Yellow Jackets, who posted a 50-18 record while earning their third trip to the College World Series.

Hyde, a junior left-hander from Fayetteville, Ga., was 6-0 with a 3.02 earned run average this spring. Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in June, he made his professional debut this week with Danville of the Appalachian League.

Rulon, a sophomore right-hander from Columbus, Ga., and Turner, a junior lefty from Dahlonega, Ga., are pitching this summer for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League. Rulon was 5-0 with two saves and a 2.02 ERA, while Turner posted a 4-4 record. Gustafson, a junior right-hander from Lilburn, Ga., was injured much of the season but had a 2-0 record with four saves.
