Anybody who questions how avid the support of the Georgia Tech fan base is for its Yellow Jackets obviously was nowhere near Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The team held its annual Fan Day and Jackets’ faithful took over the field and took full advantage of the opportunity to meet Head Coach Paul Johnson and his staff, the players and even Buzz and cheerleading staff.

The sun shone brightly and even though temperatures were in the 90s and rain clouds eventually worked their way overhead, there was no deterring fans eager to get an autograph, pose with their favorite player or coach, or simply be down on the field, some playing catch footballs with their youngsters, who pretended to be their favorite Yellow Jacket.

“It shows just how supportive our fans are,” senior A-back Roddy Jones. “With temperatures in the high 90s and the humidity… they still came out today. As a player, that makes you feel good.”

Players were broken up by position and lines outside each tent were well-attended, with the longest lines for Johnson, whose table was on the home sideline just outside the North end zone, and the quarterbacks table, located on the visiting sideline just outside the South end zone. Each line stretched almost completely across the field.

The festivities began at 3:00 p.m. on Callaway Plaza, as fans were able to play games, pick up various items like the official team poster and pocket schedules, and buy Georgia Tech merchandise sold by Barnes and Noble and Tailgater’s Alley.

The day is always a fun one and is a good sign for the expected support for the 2011 season, which begins at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1 at Bobby Dodd, against Western Carolina.
