June 27, 2013

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech track and field senior Eric Powers was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I men’s and women’s track and field/cross country second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Powers garnered second-team honors and is the first men’s track athlete to earn the award since Billy Mateker in 2010.

On the track, the distance runner won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Crimson Indoor Opener (Jan. 12) and placed third in the same event at the Georgia Tech and Yellow Jacket Invites. He helped the Georgia Tech cross country team to a first-place finish for the second consecutive year at the Crimson Classic and ran a career-best 10K at the NCAA South Regionals, where the Jackets finished fourth – the team’s best finish since 2001.

Powers maintains a cumulative 4.0 GPA in chemical and biomolecular engineering. The Mt. Pleasant, S.C., native earned the 2013 Tau Beta Pi Cup Award, the highest honor given to a graduating senior in the Georgia Tech College of Engineering.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution.
