English Named Two-Way Player of the Year Semifinalist

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech baseball redshirt-junior Tristin English was named a semifinalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year award, the College Baseball Foundation announced Wednesday.

One of the top two-way players in the country, English currently leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in league play in four offensive categories: hitting (.396), slugging (.868), home runs (11) and runs scored (32). He also ranks second in RBI (37) and third in on-base percentage (.468).

When not playing first base, English is the No. 6 Yellow Jackets’ closer on the mound. Through 13 appearances, English has worked to a 4.66 ERA and 2-0 record with five saves. In 19.1 innings of work, the Williamson, Ga. native has surrendered just 18 hits and 10 earned runs, while striking out 15. He’s also held opponents to an overall batting average of .250 during the 2019 regular season.

English received saves against some of Georgia Tech’s top opponents this season, including then-No. 4 Louisville, then-No. 9 North Carolina, then-No. 4 Georgia, while also getting a win over then-No. 3 UCLA by tossing 3.0 shutout innings in the 4-3 extra-inning victory.

One of just two ACC two-way players on the list, English joins 10 other selections – six from Power Five programs – on the watch list of semifinalists.
