Eight Yellow Jackets Named All-East Region

ATLANTA – Eight Georgia Tech track & field athletes were named to the 2008 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-East Region team announced the USTFCCCA Tuesday.

To be considered All-Region, the student-athlete must place in the top eight of his/her respective event at the NCAA Regional.

Senior Shantia Moss, one of four members of the women’s team to earn the honor, was named to her fourth consecutive 100-meter hurdles All-East Region team. Moss placed third in the women’s 100m hurdles final with a time of 13.09 to earn a trip to her fourth straight NCAA Championships in the event.

Also being recognized for their performance was junior Jacqua Williams, who placed sixth in the 200-meter dash. In the women’s hammer throw, juniors Kimery Hern and Alana Clooten finished sixth and seventh, respectively, to earn All-East Region honors. Williams and Hern will join Moss at the 2008 NCAA Championships.

The men’s squad was led by sophomore Alphonso Jordan, who placed second in the men’s triple jump with a personal-best mark of 52 feet, 9 ½ inches, earned his first All-East Region honor and an automatic spot at the NCAA Championships. Senior James Lemons II finished eighth in the triple jump to also be named to the East Region team.

In the men’s shot put, sophomore Steve Marcelle and junior Andy Powlen were each selected to the All-East Region team after finishing third and fourth, respectively. The two Yellow Jackets will next compete at the NCAA Championships.

In all, seven Jackets will compete at the NCAA Championships from Wednesday-Saturday, June 11-14 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
