Assistant Coach Todd Spencer Resigns

Feb. 1, 2012

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech Athletic Director Dan Radakovich has accepted the resignation of assistant football coach Todd Spencer after the athletic department’s internal monitoring system revealed the coach had sent text messages to prospective student-athletes in violation of member-created NCAA rules.

The Institute has reported its findings to the NCAA enforcement staff, kept them advised throughout the investigation and will submit a final report of its internal investigation. Spencer had been suspended and placed on administrative leave by Radakovich while the investigation into the coach’s phone records was underway. During the investigation Head Football Coach Paul Johnson recommended to Radakovich that Spencer’s contract be terminated. Spencer submitted his resignation before the completion of the investigation.

“We continue to take positive steps to bolster our compliance staff and monitoring systems,” Radakovich said. “I find it inexplicable that an employee would violate these rules with regard to text messaging after our ongoing focus to educate our personnel on NCAA rules and regulations. Actions of this type simply are not acceptable in our programs and will not be tolerated,” he said.

“I have directed our compliance staff to continue to review the text and phone records of all of our coaches on an ongoing basis as is the mandate and expectation of Georgia Tech and the NCAA,” Radakovich said.
